The North Sea has reached a landmark milestone in the global energy transition, with installed offshore wind capacity in the UK and Norwegian sectors collectively surpassing 18 gigawatts for the first time. The achievement underscores the rapid pace of offshore wind development across the region and signals growing confidence among investors and developers in the long-term economics of the technology.

The milestone was confirmed by the North Sea Energy Cooperation, a joint initiative between the UK, Norway, Germany, Denmark, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Luxembourg, which tracks installed capacity across member states. The 18GW figure represents a near-doubling of capacity compared to just five years ago.

The UK remains the dominant player in the North Sea offshore wind market, accounting for approximately 14GW of the total installed base. The Crown Estate's ongoing leasing rounds have attracted record levels of developer interest, with several major projects currently under construction or in advanced planning stages.

Norway's contribution to the milestone has been driven primarily by the Hywind Tampen floating wind project, which continues to demonstrate the commercial viability of floating offshore wind technology in deeper waters. The project, operated by Equinor, provides power to five oil and gas platforms in the Norwegian North Sea.

Industry analysts project that North Sea offshore wind capacity could reach 65GW by 2035 if current development pipelines are realised, representing a transformative shift in the region's energy mix and a significant contribution to European decarbonisation targets.
